About the MAMS at Loyola
Are you wondering how to become a physician? Are you struggling to get admitted into medical school? Receive excellent preparation to get into med school and achieve your goal of becoming a physician through Loyola University Chicago's MA in Medical Sciences (MAMS).
Listed as one of the best special master's programs in the United States, our MAMS has a 95% matriculation rate to medical school. That means nearly all of our Master in Medical Sciences students become medical school students.
The MAMS is led by a dedicated faculty from some of the nation's best medical schools. They will be available and accessible throughout the MAMS program and help you with every aspect of creating a compelling medical school application, including writing letters of recommendation.
Program Structure
The Master of Medical Sciences (MAMS) is a nine-month program that can only be pursued full time. Courses are held on Loyola's Lake Shore Campus, located on Chicago's North Side.
This 30-credit-hour program spans two semesters, starting in August and ending in May. Please note: You should only apply for the MAMS if you are committed to pursuing a career as a physician.

You will prepare for medical school in a learning environment that is student-centered, collaborative, and supportive—not competitive and cutthroat like some Master in Medical Sciences programs. Our small class sizes allow optimal interaction with faculty and peers.
You will learn from experts in various fields of biology and medicine who are also active researchers. In addition to creating a culture of respect and collaboration, our faculty are supportive and accessible mentors who offer substantial office hour availability.
Create a compelling medical school application by joining one of the nation’s first pre-med graduate programs. The long and rich history of our MAMS program means you will have a better chance of getting into—and succeeding in—medical school.
You will take rigorous, medically related biological graduate courses that will prove beneficial in medical school and in your future career as a physician. You will also receive substantial medical school application advising and support.
You can develop your professional skills and strengthen your medical school applications through weekly workshops with medical school admissions officers and other experts in the health care field.
Guaranteed interviews for admission to two medical schools are available to MAMS graduates who meet certain criteria.
- Stritch School of Medicine
- Criteria: MAMS GPA 3.6 or higher and MCAT 509 (in the bands). All admissions prerequisites and the entire application process must be completed for a guaranteed interview.
- Idaho College of Osteopathic Medicine
- Criteria: applicants to ICOM must meet all administrative requirements and complete the application process. ICOM limits the guaranteed interview to 10 MAMS graduates.

Application Deadlines
The available start terms and corresponding application deadlines for the Medical Sciences MA are listed below. Please keep in mind that both the application and the required materials must be submitted by the specified deadline.

Statement of Purpose
Please note the minimum test score requirements are as follows: MCAT (500), GRE (75th percentile for verbal and 50th percentile for quantitative).
Prerequisite Course Requirements
Admission to the Medical Sciences MA program requires one year of coursework in each of the following areas: biology, general chemistry, organic chemistry, physics, and mathematics (preferably calculus).
Statement of Purpose Details
The statement of purpose should explain your career goals and why you think you are a good fit for MAMs, and can be expressed in one paragraph. Along with your statement of purpose, applicants should share with us your motivation for becoming a physician and experiences that have contributed to your decision. This can typically be expressed in 1.5-2 double spaced pages. Please combine your answers into one document and submit along with your application. Students may use the personal statement from their most recent completed AMCAS, TMDSAS, or AACOMAS application, if applicable.
Official Documents
Official transcripts are those that are sent directly by the college/university to Loyola University Chicago. Transcripts sent by the student to Loyola are considered unofficial documents, and while they may be utilized for initial review of your application, official transcripts are still required. Test scores must be sent directly to Loyola from the testing agency. Official documents should be sent by the institution or testing agency to gradapp@luc.edu.
International Applicant Requirements
An official English language proficiency exam is required for international applicants whose native language is not English. If you have non-U.S. educational credentials, you are required to submit an official transcript evaluation. The transcript evaluation cannot be waived.
